Conference interpreters are those who majored in conference interpretation at a graduate school of interpretation and translation. About 1 or 2 graduates per language is/are produced a year. Conference interpreters have the highest level of proven quality and capability in interpretation services like simultaneous interpretation, consecutive interpretation and whispering. In particular, as for non-English language interpretation, a small number of 10 - 20 persons per language are active and professional conference interpreters in Korea. For your information, the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC), the umbrella organization for conference interpreters, has its headquarters in Geneva. Interpreters are different from conference interpreters. They do not have a professional education in interpretation and translation and thus cannot provide professional consecutive interpretation. Their active duty lies in general interpretations that require accompaniment. Generally interpreters are university graduates with a B.A in English or individuals who have lived overseas for over 2-3 years. Guide interpreters are those who passed the official test by the Korean National Tourism Organization. They command basic listening and speaking skills and often work for travel agencies. They are also called on as tour guides.
